we begin with hurricane irma tearing through like a buzz saw inside the satellite image of the eye you can see the island of barbuda. heres what it sounded like on the ground.

>> you're told to evacuate. get out quickly. remember we can rebuild your home but we cannot rebuild your life. >> wise words and in florida cars are lined up on freeways. and mayor telling them to be self sufficient for up to three days. >> hurricane ima has caused at least three deaths in the caribbean. >> they say irma destroyed 90% of the structures and vehicles. >> there is widespread damage on the island. maggie ruly has more. >> hurricane irma is tearing through the caribbean with 180 mile-per-hour winds. >> it is really ripping right now. >> i've covered hurricanes for more than 25 years. this is unlike anything i've ever seen. >> reporter: the streets of tourist hot spot st. martin under water.

the airport reportedly destroyed. >> i'm here outside, shaking the doors. >> reporter: on the small island of barbuda seen directly in the center of irma's eye, some 90% of the island's buildings are destroyed. in puerto rico potentially the worst storm to hit the island in a century. now florida is gearing up for a direct hit. >> never had a cat 5, never experienced it and it's just scary. >> reporter: they're nad full scale evacuation. >> so large that we're hoping it doesn't follow us if we leave. >> this is what interstate 75 looks like right now. >> reporter: at the airports it's a mad rush to get out. so far more than 1,000 flights have been canceled to and from miami this weekend. the lines for water wrapped around the block. >> gas is running out everywhere

right now . president trump have already called the state of emergency for puerto rico and the u.s. virgin islands. >> maggie ruly, abc news, new york. well, meteorologist putell is tracking the storm. >> she is here with irma's position and wind speed. >> this monster storm as we see on live doppler 7 is still holding strong. it's a category 5. you can see it's passed north of san juan puerto rico and the eye of the storm is tremendously large. this is one of the strongest hurricanes obrecord in the atlantic so far. currently a category 5 of 185 miles per hour. tracking north/northwest at 16. its next target turks & caicos as a cat 5 will bring drenching

rain, big waves and damaging winds. we're already seeing some of the damage. it's going to continue through saturday evening as a cat 4 and then it will be impacting the florida coastline right now. it looks like as early as saturday evening as a category 4. weakening to a cat 2 by monday evening. biggest thing is the storm surge. you can see how large the storm is. obviously the heavy winds and isolated 20 inch totals. behind it we have hurricane jose. a threat to the leeward island and in the gulf of mexico hurricane katia will be making land fall right now it looks like through vaur crews. biggest danger is ir. >> thanks very much. pg&e announced it is sending crews to help restore power to

florida. they're preparing to leave tomorrow morning for the east coast. the airlines are allowig people to reschedule their flights in anticipation of hurricane irma arriving in florida. abc 7 news reporter. >> reporter: some of these passengers arriving this morning from tampa are in the bay area on business. most of them are worried about the people they left behind. >> everyone's saying if you wait until tomorrow it will be too late. it will be grid locked. so minute by minute we're trying to figure out what to do. >> reporter: she did what she could to prepare. people in other parts of south florida have done the same. >> as much as i could possibly do, we took everything from outside, everything that's perishable, i got rid of. >> she described the chaos already building. >> all the water's already sold

out. supermarkets don't really have food for the families and schools are closed thursday and friday. the tolls were lifted by the governor. >> reporter: after what happened in houston. florida's governor had no problems lifting tolls throughout the state and airlines already canceling flights and giving passengers a chance to rebook at no charge. >> look at what your airline's doing right now, look at what they're offering. we're seeing a lot of airlines on their websites giving the opportunity to change without penalties. >> reporter: irma may be as bad or worse as hurricane andrew. at sfo, abc 7 news. now to latest development in daca, barack obama's executive a that protects alth 00,000 immigrants from deportation.

big question is what's next? abc 7 news reporter looks at the advice. >> reporter: jessica torres's parents brought her to the u.s. illegally when she was three. she's working towards becoming an immigration attorney to help others but with daca ending -- >> as of now my attorney told me i would have to marry a u.s. citizen if i wanted to get a green card because that's my only option. >> reporter: she's one of many dreamers who contacted an immigration attorney to find out what her options are. he's reminding people to reapply by october fifth. >> so they give you a month to extend it for up to two years. these are just temporary measures that somebody can take to try to keep their status leaguel for a little bit longer. >> reporter: today 15 states and the district of columbia filed a lawsuit to block the president's plan to end daca.

california's attorney general announced he will sue separately. california law professor says the states will likely argue rescinding daca is unconstitutional. they may also site prejudice as a region. >> people challenging daca might point to statements by the president in the past about how he views mexicans or immigrants generally. >> says it will be a challenge for those fighting the federal government. >> i'm concerned about my job, what's going to happen with my job, everything i've worked so hard for. >> reporter: they're telling dreamers deportations are not going to happen overnight with daca recipients in the u.s., it's an enormous undertaking. >> students and faculty are remembering their long-time band director tonight. jerry downs was the band director atti ingrid -- he diedn

a car accident. will always be remembered as the district's music man. pacifica police department is investigating exactly what happened. now to a crime in the north bay. a tib ron man is in a lot of trouble after they say he shot and killed a deer and a faun eating plants on his property. >> this is family of deer we watched from the time they were little tiny fauns. >> reporter: they've been taking pictures of a doe and two fawns. >> very outerages. to scare a sdooer, all you have to do is look at you and they'll run off. you don't need to shoot them. >> we got -- >> they found a home owner who

said deer had been eating his new landscaping. nearby a gruesome site. >> we discovered two deer that he'd shot with a pellet gun. >> reporter: they say this is the pellet gun 54-year-old mark dickerson used to kill the deer. he was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. >> you don't kill a doe with her fawn. >> the organization is getting lots of reaction to the crime on its facebook page. most of it from animal lovers. >> even if they do eat your vejeration it's not worth killing a bbeautiful, gentle animal. >> reporter: his attorney says police had no right to arrest him. >> my client had no intention of harming, hurting or acting in any malicious way towards the animals. >> reporter: what was his intent? >> scare them away.

details about a new transit village at the walnut creek station. the transit agency says the development includes 600 apartments, shops and restaurant squaz new parking garage with 100 additional spots and the garage with bart passengers who say it's tough to find a space. they tried to calm concerns. >> this is done in stages. and no matter what happens we're going to have the same number of spots available throughout this process. a san francisco supervisor

says the city's response to the record breaking heat wave was too slow and inadequate. >> everyone knew it was going to be hot, really hot. the weather service warned that on friday it could break records and that the heat wave would continue saturday. >> the reality is san francisco was caught flat footed. the emergency operations center was not activated until friday night, long after we had reached unprecedented temperatures. >> other members of the oversight committee want answers. among them why information about the city's cooling centers didn't go out the public until friday night. 911 dispatchers received more than 800 calls each of the two days. on an average day they get about 200 calls. he says that overwhelmed the response of ambulances. >> the response time is ranging as high as over an hour.

some of them for transferring individuals from one hospital to another. some to get calls for service at their place of residents in excess of 20 minutes. >> reporter: aid was called from as far away as sacramento. but he says the emergency operating center did open friday morning. >> we had a duty officer there, we had a manager on call. so we were ready for a busy day. >> reporter: the fire department did not provide a response to our request for an interview. abc 7 news meteorologist here with it all. >> those temperatures came down. live doppler 7 right now we're tracking the marine layer and watching mid and high level clouds coming in.

as the monstrous hurricane irma makes its way towards florida, efforts are underway to get people and animals out of harm's way. a rescue center by former oakland a's star are answering the call. >> oo you might have heard of the tony luruso animal rescue foundation started by the former player and manager of the oakland a's. today the animal charity is preparing the walnut creek facility to receive hundreds of pets in a partner shelter in south florida. florida shelter is trying to mike room for an expected onslaught of animals from people

who have to be there irma. >> currently arf is offering free adaupshzs on our exist canning animals within our facility in walnut creek so we can make additional room and accom dagdss for the animals coming in. >> it's already home to hundreds of pets in the wake of hurricane harvey. these animals are undergoing health checks and many will soon be available to adopt. if you would like to help, more than a donation page up and we have a link on our website, abc 7 news.com. a florida sheriff has a warning for anyone thinking about going to a shelter in his jurisdiction. sheriff grady jud tweeted if you go to a shelter for irma and have a warrant, we'll gladly escort you to the polk county jail. we cannot and will not have

innocent children with sexual predators period. they should quote focus on preparing for irma, not burnishing your joe arpaio tactics with irresponsible tweets. >> and one last update. let's check out hurricane irma right now as you check out live doppler 7 you'll note this is eye is still very well defined. this is a large storm and it will move just north of espanola. this is a category 5 storm, very dangerous. maximum sustained winds, 185 miles per hour. it will be a cat 5 as it crosses turks & caicos tomorrow evening and over the bahamas as a category 5 but as it approached southern florida weakening to a cat 4 and continuing to weaken but it is going to dump heavy
